Feeling Locky?: Ransomware is on the Rise

A stream of digital code.

Are you feeling Locky?

There is nothing lucky about your machine or network receiving a ransomware infection. Not only can it be highly destructive, but the matter could have been avoided in some cases. Discovered early last year, Locky is a relatively young malware initiative coming out of Russia. We’d like to take you through what it is, how it works, and what you can do to stay safe. Let’s take a look.

What is Locky?

Locky is a form of ransomware, which is a form of malware. It comes into your machine in the form of a Microsoft word document. The word document appears to be encrypted, and thus you are prompted to click on “options” to enable macros. Once you do this, the malicious file is downloaded into your machine and the nightmare begins. The malware encrypts all of your files and claims that it will decrypt them in exchange for bit-coin, a digital form of currency. You are then prompted to access the “Deep Web” or Tor Network to make the payment.

How can Locky be avoided?

One of the absolute best ways to ensure that you aren’t tricked into open a malicious file is to make sure that you can trust the person who sent it to you. You should always be careful of suspicious files and of suspicious downloads. If you think there is a problem, take the extra step to confirm that everything is in order before proceeding. You should also always keep a backup of all of your files. With a backup, you wouldn’t be afraid to simply “lose” all of those encrypted files. You would already have them somewhere else, safe and sound. Don’t let Locky and other malicious software ruin your business.
